Since their 2001 debut, Never Stood a Chance (Tight Spot), Austin, TX band Masonic has been creating well crafted noise pop along the lines of Stereolab, Yo La Tengo, and The Vaselines framed by a pre-murder Phil Spector influenced production and blending them into a seamless mixture of danceable rhythms, heavy guitar riffs, and catchy keyboard melodies.

Principal songwriters and brothers Kevin Mason (keyboards) and John Mason (guitars and keyboards), along with brother Brian Mason (drums) added bassist Trey D’Amico and vocalist Eryn Gettys in late 2004 to round out the sound.

The group is releasing their 5th LP, Live Like A Millionaire in early 2010.  Throughout the summer and autumn of 2009, John produced the album out of his home studio while surrounded by stacks of vintage keyboards and guitars, vinyl and tape loops. Armed with a powerful laptop, and inspired by Brian Wilson, Masonic was able to play with the classic pop structure, sometimes splicing multiple movements into three minute pop songs.

Eryn has evolved into a singular voice inspired by French rock and pre-Beatles American pop vocalists. Lyrically, Kevin expands on his theme of regret, addiction, and breakups by adding passages about obsession and shallowness. Finally, Brian’s pounding drums and Trey’s Stereloab inspired bass provide the backdrop to the finely arranged keyboard and guitar melodies.  The end result is Masonic’s most melodic, intimate, challenging, and focused work to date.
